Provincial Autonomy Should Include Adult Choice
A civic-rights brief connecting Alberta autonomy rhetoric with measurable, province-built adult nicotine policy.
Autonomy should be practical
Premier Danielle Smith and Minister Dale Nally publicly argued in March that making regulated nicotine alternatives harder to access than cigarettes sends the wrong signal, as reported by CHAT News Today. A provincial approach should apply that same logic inside Alberta.
The civic limits test
Government can set rules. It can protect youth. It can enforce against unlawful sellers. But adult choice should not be reduced unless the province can show the restriction is targeted and likely to work.
The fall standard
- Show the source-of-access evidence.
- Use provincial enforcement capacity where it fits.
- Do not confuse lawful adult access with illegal youth supply.
