Smith’s Nicotine Logic Should Apply at Home

A liberty-focused brief saying Alberta should not criticize Ottawa for restricted access while narrowing adult options provincially.

Consistency matters

Premier Danielle Smith argued that making regulated nicotine alternatives harder to access can send the wrong signal to adults trying to quit, according to CHAT News Today. If Alberta uses that logic federally, it should also test Bill 208 against it provincially.

A rights-minded policy question

The question is not whether government can regulate. It can. The question is whether a restriction is targeted enough to protect youth without pushing legal adults into worse or less visible channels.

The fall consistency test

  • Does the rule preserve a lawful adult pathway?
  • Does it identify the illegal-supply problem separately?
  • Does it publish metrics instead of relying on slogans?
